REMEMBRANCE Sunday was marked at Amesbury School by Henry, Third Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, unveiling a blue plaque to his grandfather Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, ’Monty’.

The plaque, awarded by the Haslemere Society, recognises that Monty lived at Amesbury School during the Second World War and used rooms there as rear headquarters for Operation Overlord, the D-Day landings in 1944.

He also planned the invasion of Sicily from a little green hut in the garden. He kept rooms at Amesbury School throughout the Second World War and credited the stability it provided with contributing to his success.

Amesbury pupil Stanley Alesbrook was also at the unveiling. Stanley’s great grandfather, Jack Simpson, took part in the D-Day landings and the Battle of Arnhem and was captured.

Jack managed to escape and was awarded a military cross for his service. His discharge papers were signed by Field Marshal Montgomery.
