Campaigners insist the wheels are still turning on a bid to have a pump track installed in Haslemere.
Wayne Restall from ThePumpTrack project, and Alex Page, local representative from the Cycle Advocacy Network, recently spoke to a Haslemere Town Council committee about a bid to install a pump track at the Town Meadow.
The campaign has been running since 2021 and an official proposal document was published in January 2022. The document states a pump track is needed due to “inadequate facilities” in the area and the track would stop people from undertaking dangerous rides in woodland and making their own paths.
Members of the HTC Amenities, Infrastructure & CIL Committee showed support for the idea in principle at their February 13 meeting, but feel the Town Meadow is the wrong location.
Councillor Jacquie Keen for Haslemere West added that Waverley Borough Council are installing a pump track in Farnham, so there will be one not too far way.
Following the meeting, Mr Page said: “A big thanks to all the support for the pump track in the Town Meadow, there was enough support to be noticed.
“Unfortunately, the Town Council have other plans which are also great and they are not mutually exclusive, meaning the campaign is not over.”
According to council documents, Mr Restall had previously been in contact with Lynchmere Parish Council about locating the track on Camelsdale Recreation Ground, but the conversation had stalled on the issue of ongoing maintenance.
Campaigners believe the Meadow was the perfect location due to its proximity to the MB Cyclery shop, next to the High Street for families to keep an eye on children, and the lack of close parking which would encourage people to walk or cycle there.
Mr Restall and Mr Page will now meet with the Town Clerk to discuss alternative locations.
