The January Swan Barn Wassail was such a resounding success that plans are already underway for the 2025 event – and organisers are calling for volunteers to help make it another unforgettable celebration.

The 2024 Wassail saw two hundred people wade through the mud to wassail Old Man Apple at the National Trust’s Swan Barn Farm. The torchlight parade, led by the XR drummers, guided revellers to the orchard’s oldest tree. This ancient English Yuletide ritual, meant to bless cider orchards and ensure a good harvest, included serenading Old Man Apple with wassail songs, cider offerings, and toast decorations.

Despite its centuries-old origins, the tradition has become a favourite in Haslemere, and even more hands are needed for 2025 to help prep, cook, serve, and organise. Volunteers can get involved with the community cook-up – supported last year by Co-op and Tesco – or serve food and drinks, manage the torchlit parade as stewards, and set up outdoor infrastructure.

For those with a knack for planning, the organising committee offers a great behind-the-scenes role. Musicians are also encouraged to share their talents and energise the Wassail spirit.

Co-organiser and Cllr Claire Matthes said: "This event actually couldn’t happen without the dozens of local volunteers who stepped forward to help make this such a memorable event and an ongoing fixture in the Haslemere events calendar."

Volunteers will enjoy food, drink, and the satisfaction of supporting their community. To get involved or find out more, email [email protected]
