One unsung hero at a Haslemere care home has stepped into the spotlight after she scooped an award at this year’s Surrey Care Awards.

Ann Essam, Redcot Care Home’s much-loved 82-year-old Activities Coordinator, has been honoured with the ‘Unsung Hero – Making Care Possible’ award for her dedication to enhancing the quality of life for Redcot’s residents.

Ann, who returned to work at Redcot in 2001 after a brief retirement, accepted the award at a ceremony held at Denbies Wine Estate on November 8.

“When I heard my name, I was completely blown away,” said Ann. “I couldn’t believe it – it still hasn’t sunk in!”

Ann’s journey back into the workforce was inspired by her passion for helping others.

“Being with the residents each day is a blessing,” she said. “As I’m close in age to them, we connect on so many levels, and I feel part of one big, happy family.”

Ann’s role involves designing and delivering a tailored activities programme that engages residents both physically and mentally. From film nights to gentle exercise sessions and community group visits, Ann puts the residents’ well-being at the heart of everything she does.

And the care home isn’t keeping quiet about their award-winning member of staff.

“Ann really is a force of nature,” said Jan Daly, Redcot’s registered manager. “She goes the extra mile to improve the quality of life, health, well-being, and happiness of each resident, including those living with dementia. It’s in her DNA. We’re incredibly lucky to have her.”
