The Haslemere U3A Local History group enjoyed an engaging session in November, with Lois Proud from Haslemere Museum bringing Roman artefacts to share. Among the items were pottery, coins, and other objects from the museum’s handling collection. Lois used a map to show the Roman roads of southern England, focusing on Stane Street, which passed near Haslemere. She also highlighted the remains of a Roman road through Milland and local villas at Bignor and Fishbourne.

Lois explained Roman history, including Boudicca's uprising, before passing around pieces of Roman pottery, including decorated bowls and amphorae, many with shiny surfaces due to mica in the clay. Some of the artefacts, including cinerary urns, were found at Alice Holt and verified by the British Museum. Thanks to a recent Lottery grant, Haslemere Museum has plans to expand its outreach programme, bringing more of its artefacts to schools and other organisations.
