Redcot Residential Care Home in Haslemere, managed by the charity Friends of the Elderly, welcomed the festive season with a Mince Pie Bake-A-Thon.

The bake-off, spearheaded by Redcot's award-winning Activities Coordinator, Ann Essam, saw residents competing alongside Chef Helen Taylor-Bray. Under the watchful eye of interim manager Staci Abernethy – dubbed the “Christmas Pru-ne Fairy” for the occasion – participants whipped up festive treats in a battle of culinary skill.

Resident Susan Osbourne, who joined Redcot in 2022, emerged victorious. Her winning mince pies were described by Staci as “absolutely delicious.”

“Making the mince pies was such fun,” Susan said. “We had a wonderful time laughing and sharing stories.”

The event proved to be more than just a bake-off. Ann explained how the activity sparked fond memories among the residents.

“Many recalled family traditions, from racing to find the sixpence in the Christmas pudding to baking with their mothers and aunts. Baking has such benefits for older people – engaging the senses, evoking nostalgia, and fostering creativity.

“And there wasn’t a soggy bottom in sight,” joked Ann. “The pies disappeared in no time during afternoon tea – there certainly won’t be any left for Santa!”
