AN impressive 21 records were broken at Amesbury School’s annual House Athletics Day.
Changes for 2019 were that races were boys against boys and girls against girls, and every pupil took part in at least three events throughout the day.
The day kicked off at 8.45am with all pupils taking part in a field event, supported by a record number of parents.
After the field events, it was a quick turnaround for the Early Years athletics day at 11am, when the school’s youngest members competed in a sprint race, relay and novelty races, with the eagerly-anticipated and hotly-contested mum and dad races as the grand finale.
Next up were Years 1 and 2 track events supervised by Year 8s to develop their leadership skills. A highlight was the high standard of the relay changeovers at such a young age.
The final contests were the Years 3 to 8 track events, with the increased number because of this year’s gender split meaning they took longer, but all were finished before the sun set.
New records were set in each year for the long jump, ranging from 2.95m in Year 3 to 4.45m in Year 8. A new record was set by Year 8 for the 1500m race, with a finish time of five minutes 12 seconds.
Guest of honour Andrew Wolfe, the UK tchoukball youth coach presented the medals throughout the afternoon.
Amesbury marketing manager Natalie Holmes said: “Andrew has not just been inspirational but the driving force behind tchoukball for nearly four decades.
“Amesbury has embraced the sport in the past four years and is now producing international players on a regular basis.
“Our thanks go to Andrew for giving up his time.”
