There were beers, cheers and even tears in Tongham as a ceremony to mark a landmark renovation at an award-winning brewery also marked the end of an era.
There was an outpouring of glee on Thursday (February 20) as Hogs Back Brewery held a special event to unveil its renovated tap room.
But there was also a special toast as Rupert Thompson announced to hoppers, TEA Club members and guests that he is stepping down as managing director, with head brewer Miles Chesterman taking his place.
The “master brewer” has big boots to fill but few know Hogs Back better than Miles, as he joined the team in 2013.

Farnham town mayor, councillor Brodie Mauluka, and his Guildford Borough counterpart were among the guests who raised a glass at the special event, with Caroline Breckell, Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey, getting the honour of cutting the ribbon.
The new stone floor tap room includes a “bigger and better bar” with photos adorning the walls to showcase the upgrades made at the brewery.
The renovation was made possible by a Rural England Prosperity Fund grant from Surrey County Council which matched any investment into the new tap by the brewers.
Mr Thompson will remain actively involved with Hogs Back Brewery as he has become executive chairman.

The brewery has gone from strength to strength since he and Miles joined in 2011 and 2013, respectively, but it’s been a collective effort, and he said their success wouldn’t have happened without the volunteer “hoppers” who dedicate their time and efforts to help produce the pints.
Guests were treated to a free pint on arrival, shop discounts and live music by guitarist Luke Edney. And keep an eye out on Instagram and Facebook as “Those Pub Guys” filmed throughout the event and got the story about the brewery
