The greatest show on turf is coming to East Hampshire as a field near Froxfield is hosting the Le Mans of lawnmower racing.
The world’s toughest lawnmower race is coming to Hampshire for the first time on Saturday (August 10) with 50 teams making tracks to The Trooper for an event in a field of its own.
The action will be fast and furious during the 12-hour event with teams of three racing at speeds of up to 50mph throughout the night.
Entrants will be battled hardened as the winning mower will have covered 350 miles on a bumpy track without suspension.
The grass roots event is based on the famous Le Mans 24 with the flag dropping at 8pm.
The race takes on a totally different atmosphere as dusk falls with the pits becoming a sea of light and mower headlights punching holes in the rural darkness as drivers settle in for the long night ahead.
But the pace remains relentless and photo finishes are not unheard of when the chequered flag drops.
The machines are domestic mowers – modified to strict rules that adhere to a philosophy of cheap, entry-level motorsport – while the prize will be the coveted 12 Hour Trophy once hoisted by Sir Stirling Moss.
There will also be ‘Lawn Ranger’ ironman category with one intrepid racer attempting the race solo while entertainment, live bands, trackside catering and bar facilities will be provided.
Qualifying kicks off at 3pm while a 6pm pit walk will give visitors the chance to get close to the mowers and talk to the drivers.
Full race commentary will be provided locally on 87.7FM Radio Le Mow or through www.blmra.co.uk/12hour
Tickets are £8 in advance or £10 on the day with proceeds going to Prostate Cancer UK, free entry for under 16s.
