Feelings were high at a recent town council meeting when the subject of the 20mph limit once again resurfaced.

Haslemere Town Council remains determined to bring the lower speed limit to town. It will be reviewing whether other areas, not just the main high street, should also get a new speed limit before its March meeting with its recommendations to be sent to Surrey County Council (SCC).

Cllr Terry Weldon said: “The reason we are asking for this is clear. A 20mph limit saves lives, reduces accidents, and lessens their severity. Residents support this, and it’s the right thing to do.”

Cllr Lesley Banfield voiced frustration at delays from SCC, stating: “It is very disappointing that Surrey has dragged its feet. Nationally, they’re behind the curve. Lower speeds don’t just improve safety – they encourage walking, improving mental and physical health. Expanding the zone would benefit everyone.”

Beyond public backing for the scheme, councillors have a personal reason for wanting the lower speed limit.

Former town councillor Mr Mackie was tragically killed at 90-years-old just a short distance from the town hall in a vehicle collision in 2016. Hit by a vehicle, Mr Mackie was taken to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Former Cllr Simon Drake described him as “an absolute gentleman” and a great loss to the community. A Waverley councillor at the time said: “He was a dear colleague and will be very much missed. It’s desperately sad for someone who lived 90 years to pass in such a way.”
