Farnham Carnival and The Bourne Show have joined the list of summer 2021 events which have had to be cancelled because of the pandemic.

But a number of outdoor community events are being planned for later in the year, including a Halloween-themed fayre in Gostrey Meadow.

Farnham Carnival had been set to take place in June, while it had been hoped The Bourne Show would return on July 2.

Carnival chairman Graham Noakes said: “Despite the national picture starting to look a little more positive, even if there are no delays in implementing each phase, the government’s step-by-step post-lockdown plan simply does not allow sufficient time for such a major event to be put on in its usual format.”

The next Farnham Carnival is scheduled to take place in June 2022.

And Liz Jones, a member of The Bourne Show committee, said: “We will be back bigger and better in 2022 – July 2, 2022, is in the diary!”

In better news, with growing confidence that large-scale public events might be able to take place later in the year, the Farnham Carnival committee is considering putting on a Halloween-themed event at the end of October.

“We want to play our part in getting the ‘feel-good factor’ back into the town as soon as we can,” added Mr Noakes.

“Early days perhaps, but we are currently looking at the idea of a Halloween Fayre in Gostrey Meadow together with maybe a Spooky Trail, giving children the chance to dress up as well as providing a fun day out for all the family.

“It’s exciting that we can start thinking about getting everyone back together again after all this time. Scary stuff!”

Hale Carnival and Wrecclesham Village Fete have also been cancelled in recent weeks. But Rowledge Village Fayre is planning to go ahead on Bank Holiday Monday, August 30.
