Plans to build 99 homes on the Royal School junior site in Hindhead could increase the strain on local GP services and schools, Haslemere Town Council has said.

The council’s planning committee met to consider Cala Homes’ proposal to tear down the existing school buildings and replace them with 88 houses and 11 flats.

Councillors did not raise a formal objection, but did express several concerns.

The main issue noted was  the strain on the existing health centre at nearby Grayshott, which is at “maximum capacity already”.

Councillors also noted a lack of places at local state and private schools, and felt the development’s sustainable transport links were inadequate.

“The closest bus stop by the BP garage is a considerable walk across fast-moving roads,” they said.

The town council also blasted Cala Homes’ “disingenuous ploy” to hold a public consultation event in Grayshott, without inviting Haslemere Town Council.

This despite the development sitting in the parish of Haslemere.
