A brave teenage Scout has been hailed a hero after saving a man from drowning during an evening water sports event. Year 9 student Ezra from Bohunt School received a Commendation Award from the County and Deputy Commissioners of Surrey Scouts for his life-saving actions at West Wittering beach this past July.

While out with the 1st Camelsdale Scouts for an evening of windsurfing and paddleboarding, Ezra noticed one of their instructors lying face down in the water. He quickly ran over, turned the instructor over while raising the alarm, allowing others to bring him to shore for resuscitation.

The instructor was then rushed to hospital, where he thankfully made a full and rapid recovery.

The Scouts' motto is ‘be prepared,’ and Ezra certainly was. It can take only seconds for someone to drown, and he and his fellow Scouts undoubtedly saved the instructor’s life.

“As a group, they demonstrated core Scout values at a critical moment. Ezra, in particular, showed great courage, and we’re very proud of him,” said Dave Reckord, team leader of the 1st Camelsdale Scouts.

Despite now being able to add “life-saver” to his many badges, Ezra has stayed humble. He said: “I’m just so glad he’s OK!”

Simon Bassett, owner of 2XS, the company hosting the Scouts' water sports session, added: “Ezra’s quick reactions, together with Scout Leader Amy and instructor Tom, saved the instructor’s life. A massive thank you to Ezra, Amy, and Tom – their actions saved the day.”
