A Surrey school has been recognised for its outstanding commitment to mental health, earning the top Gold award from the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools.

Undershaw, an independent specialist school, was praised for its pioneering approach to wellbeing, offering students a range of support, including swimming, Animal Care and Forest School.

A dedicated Pastoral Team provides ongoing support throughout the school day, while two Family Liaison Officers work closely with parents and carers to ensure a holistic approach to student wellbeing.

The school also offers specialist mental health support, with two qualified Dramatherapists providing group and one-on-one sessions across all age groups. Staff receive comprehensive mental health training, including a nationally recognised NOCN Level 2 qualification, delivered in-house by the school’s Dramatherapy team.

Headteacher Emma West said: “Good mental health is the foundation of a happy, thriving school community. It creates a supportive environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and able to flourish. This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to promoting well-being and ensuring our school is a place where both students and staff can truly thrive."

The award, established in 2017 by Leeds Beckett University and social enterprise Minds Ahead, recognises schools that prioritise mental health. More than 1,400 schools nationwide have taken part, but only a select few achieve Gold status.

Rachel C. Boyle, Dean of the Carnegie School of Education, said: “This award demonstrates the school’s significant commitment to improving children’s and staff’s mental health and wellbeing. It is a testament to creating a safe and secure learning environment where all children can fulfil their potential.”

Minds Ahead CEO Dean Johnstone added: “It is thrilling and humbling to see schools like Undershaw leading the way in mental health support. I’d like to offer my congratulations on this deserved recognition.”
