A pub in Haslemere has joined a nationwide effort to tackle loneliness.

The Mill is taking a bold step to combat loneliness and build community connections with the launch of Butcombe’s Big Table Talk. This new initiative, part of a wider effort by the Butcombe Pub and Brewery Group, invites locals to enjoy a free cup of tea or coffee while engaging in meaningful conversations in a welcoming environment.

Jamie Queen, Chief Growth Officer of Butcombe Group, knows all to well the significance pubs have as community hubs.

“Pubs are the original social network, a place at the heart of communities where people come together,” said Jamie. “No one should feel alone. Butcombe’s Big Table Talk is about encouraging genuine connections and conversations, which can make a big difference.”

The initiative encourages anyone seeking company – whether alone or with friends – to drop by participating pubs, including The Mill. The programme aims to build a stronger, more supportive community, one conversation at a time.

The launch coincides with Blue Monday, often dubbed the most depressing day of the year, which fell on January 20 this year. This day is often said to heighten feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Jamie added: “Loneliness is one of the largest public health challenges in the UK. We hope initiatives like Butcombe’s Big Table Talk can help turn the tide by offering warmth, connection, and a listening ear.”

The Campaign to End Loneliness reports that in 2022, nearly half of UK adults – 25.9 million people – experienced loneliness at varying levels. The Mill’s new initiative offers a simple but impactful way to address this growing issue, creating a space for people to connect and share.

For those in the Haslemere area, Butcombe’s Big Table Talk provides an opportunity to take a break, enjoy a cuppa, and rediscover the power of community.
