A landmark which has towered over Whitehill and Hogmoor for decades has disappeared with little fanfare.

The transmission tower which stood at the southern end of Hogmoor Inclosure was pulled down last week in a move which took many residents by surprise.

There was no public announcement while speculation has been rife over why the MOD relic has met its demise, as the mast was connected to the RAF unit in Oakhanger.

But it’s been redundant for a few years while the Ministry of Defence requested its removal due to “cases of anti-social behaviour occurring at the site with people climbing the structure”.

The tower, which was also falling into disrepair, was quickly removed after coming down with a loud crash last Wednesday.

There’s now barely an indication it even stood at the site, which will be cleared and left to rewild according to the Deadwater Valley Trust. And while it never really loved, it’s fair to say the landmark will be missed.
