Aldershot & Farnham (A&F) Hockey Club’s ladies’ first team picked up an impressive 3-0 win at Maidstone Ladies in the South East Women’s Premier Division.
The Shots got off to the perfect start and took an early lead. The ball was passed to the halfway line to Emily Desmond, who played it towards the D where Sydney Field ran on to it. Field was one-on-one with the keeper and scored through her legs.
A&F then soaked up some Maidstone pressure, with strong tackles from the defence. Maidstone won a number of penalty corners, but were unable to score.
The Shots regrouped and some sterling work from the forwards was rewarded with a corner. Maidstone broke early twice and were left to defend with only two outfield players. The two Maidstone players were sent to the halfway line, but A&F couldn’t capitalise.
Sophia Fielding made a good run and her shot hit a foot on the line. The ball popped out for Laura Gibson, but her shot hit another foot on the line. A flick was awarded, but Phoebe Bryant couldn’t put it away and A&F led 1-0 at half-time.
The Shots doubled their advantage in the second half.
Desmond received the ball on the right and made a good drive past two of the defenders before forcing the home keeper into a save.
A&F were first to the rebound and forced a second save before the ball landed perfectly for Hannah Wrench to finish on the volley.
The Shots scored a third goal late on. Fielding made a strong baseline drive and cut the ball back across the face of the D, and Desmond was there to slot the ball home and confirm A&F’s victory.
