Aldershot & Farnham (A&F) Hockey Club’s Ladies’ first team returned to winning ways with a 2-0 win against Burnt Ash in the South East Women’s Premier Division.
A&F pressed high to win the ball from the push back. This set the trend for the first half as Burnt Ash’s attacks were swiftly dealt with by the defensive and midfield lines.
The hosts won a couple of early corners in quick succession. After a few near misses at the top of the D, a slap from Phoebe Bryant hit a few defenders’ feet before finding the backboard to give the Shots a 1-0 lead. A&F looked to increase their lead with high work-rate across the team, but were unable to extend the lead before half-time.
A&F continued to have the upper hand and create more opportunities in the second half. With space to play around the back the defenders showed good composure to wait for the perfect chance.
As Burnt Ash looked to apply more pressure the ball reached Tammy Cherry on the right. She cut the ball back to Sacha Mullins in front of goal, but some quick reactions from the Burnt Ash keeper prevented a second goal. More corners were won with several alternative routines tried, but the second goal continued to allude A&F.
Burnt Ash won a corner, but A&F’s defence held firm.
With four minutes to go Burnt Ash received a green card after taking out one of the A&F players. The Shots were able to capitalise with a quick free hit from Tasmin Urquhart delivered into the D, and Cherry calmly moved the keeper from right to left before finishing on the reverse to confirm the win for Shots.
The win leaves the Shots in seventh place with 20 points from 14 matches.
