Chawton Park Bowling Club Ladies finished their indoor season on a high by carrying off three Hampshire county titles.
Beryl Collier, Margaret Holden and Margaret Leppard dominated their two-wood triples final from the start against a strong Victory trio, skipped by Kath Patrick who conceded with two ends to go. In the afternoon, the Chawton team faced another Victory triple led by Wendy Brown. Chawton’s dominance continued as they amassed a 21-5 lead that included a couple of fruitful Margaret Leppard take-outs. But the game was far from being all over. The Victory ladies’ confidence grew as they put together a winning run to get within three shots going into the last end. However, the Chawton triple managed to defend one down and take the game by two shots.
Chawton’s successful three were joined by Sue Murray on Sunday morning to do battle with Janet Williamson’s Atherley rink. The the match was close for long periods, but the Chawton rink finally pulled away to win by 20 shots to 12, so completing a county treble for the club.
Chawton Park men were crowned Bramley Bowl Hampshire League champions, albeit in unsatisfactory circumstances. Opponents Victory IBC broke a league rule that limits teams to a maximum of four Hampshire Liberty Trophy bowlers at any one time (Victory played 10).
Chawton, with a superior shot difference over nearest rivals Palmerston, officially required two points to secure the title. Although the final outcome had been decided, Chawton put up a creditable effort, losing by only 13 shots overall to the vastly strengthened Victory team. Chawton were awarded eight points and the championship. Chawton would rather have done it without Victory’s points penalty, but deserved their success over the course of the season.
Chawton Park’s club competitions were due to be completed in mid-March, but the Beast from the East had other ideas and the final day was disrupted.
There were close encounters in several finals. In the ladies’ singles, Sue Moore, in her first year of competitive bowls, gave the experienced Beryl Collier a run for her money before going down 19-21.
It was nip-and-tuck in the ladies’ fours, with Brenda Plumpton’s rink finally defeating Margaret Leppard’s four on the extra end. In the mixed pairs, the Johnsons snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Alice Atwell and Mark Fyfield.
