Farnham Town director Harry Hugo has hailed the club’s Invincibles after the Combined Counties Premier Division South champions completed their league campaign with a 7-0 win at Tooting & Mitcham United on Saturday.
Farnham’s main objective at the start of the season was to win promotion to Step 4 – which was sealed with nine games to spare – and Hugo admitted the record-breaking campaign exceeded expectations.
“This season will go down in history,” said Hugo. “To finish the campaign with our biggest league win of the season was perfect. I would have taken a 0-0 draw, but to finish off with a 7-0 win was fantastic. Lots of teams dominate leagues but very few go through a season unbeaten – all it can take to lose a game is one mistake or one decision going against you. In future years everyone involved in this season will be able to look back and say they were part of an unbeaten season.
“There were so many records broken along the way. We’ve kept 31 clean sheets, scored 130 league goals, got 108 points and had record-equalling runs in the FA Cup and the FA Vase. It’s been historic. The support we’ve had from the town has been incredible and I’d like to thank everyone who has supported us. Hopefully we can create more memories at Step 4 next season.”
Assistant manager Jimmy Hibburt took charge at Tooting on Saturday. Charlie Postance helped himself to a hat-trick, and Owen Dean, Jack Dean, Dean Rule and Lewis Flatman were also on target for the visitors. Hibburt was delighted to finish the league campaign in emphatic fashion, and praised the squad for their efforts throughout the season.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the league season,” said Hibburt. “We went 2-0 up early on but then lost our way a little bit. We got the third goal before half-time and in the second half we played some superb football. I’m really pleased for Charlie as he maybe hasn’t started as many games as he would have liked, but his attitude has been spot on. It’s been a whole group effort and everyone has bought into it. When we’ve made difficult decisions to leave people out and explained our reasons why everyone has accepted it. Obviously we’ve been winning games, which helps.
“At the start of the season we were confident in our abilities as a management group. We knew the way we wanted to play and were confident we would have success, but it’s full plaudits to the boys for the records they’ve set.”
