Petersfield earned an emphatic 40-12 win at home to Newbury Blues in Regional Two South Central.

The hosts opened the scoring after 15 minutes when some clean passes and a kick to the left wing saw Miles Sampson latch on to the ball and touch down for Nick Blumlein to add the extras.

Hooker Sam Brown was next to cross the whitewash from a well-worked forwards’ move that had him with the ball ten metres out to power through the defence to score a try converted by Blumlein.

Newbury showed their intent and secured the ball from the restart and with their mobile back row and back line combining crossed the line in the corner for an unconverted try.

From a penalty lineout Franco Tomic secured the ball at the tail and using his power and acceleration placed the ball over the line for the reliable Blumlein to add the extras.

Petersfield led 21-5 at half-time.

The hosts secured the try bonus point when Liam Perkins twisted out of a tackle to score a converted try close to the posts.

Second row Oli Hunt was next to cross the try line from a mid-lineout training move. Hunt scored near to touch and Blumlein’s conversion attempt hit the post and bounced out.

Newbury had received two yellow cards and were temporarily down to 13 men.

Charlie Muir scored Petersfield’s final try with a scything run from halfway on the left touch to cross by the left post.

While the hosts counted down the seconds to full time they let their guard drop and Newbury burst through with a long sprint to add a converted try to their score.

Petersfield will travel to Gillingham to meet North Dorset in their final match of the league season on Saturday.
