The annual Farnham Sports Awards have been a celebration of local sport continuously since 1974 – it was even held virtually during the Covid-19 years.
During that 50-year period many sports men and women have had the spotlight turned on their achievements and plenty of unsung heroes, too.
Past winners of the main sports personality award include England cricketer Graham Thorpe, England rugby player Jonny Wilkinson and Paralympian Rachel Morris.
Farnham Sports Council secretary Sue Keogh said: “We have a wide range of categories that should meet the requirements for all sorts of sporting success or voluntary commitment during 2023 and any club or individual is welcome to nominate those who they think are worthy of recognition.
“The closing date is close at hand so don’t miss out. Please nominate as soon as possible; the process is very easy.”
Organised by Farnham Sports Council, the annual awards initiative provides an opportunity for talented sports people, teams, clubs and dedicated volunteers to be recognised. The newest category, the Environmental Impact Award, was won last year by Stellar Gymnastics.
The categories are: Sports Personality of the Year, Young Sports Personality of the Year, Sports Club of the Year, Coach of the Year, Sports Team of the Year, Young Sports Team of the Year, Disability Sports Award, Service to Sport Award, Volunteer of the Year Award, Young Volunteer of the Year and Environmental Impact Award.
Nominees must live in Farnham or be part of a school or club in the town, and the achievements, except for the service to sport category, must have been between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023.
The person making the nomination simply needs to describe, in between 100 and 300 words, how the nominee meets the criteria for the specific award.
The deadline for this year’s awards nominations is midnight tonight (Sunday) and the event itself takes place at Farnham Rugby Club on Monday, February 5.
Sue added: “Please remember to nominate because there are so many deserving individuals, teams and clubs in the town.”
Further information on the criteria and how to enter can be found on the sports council’s website.
