A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman’s body was found in Alton.

Police were called to an address on Spitalhatch at 2.51pm on Sunday (August 1), where the body of a 54-year-old woman was discovered.

A 59-year-old man from Alton has since been arrested on suspicion of her murder. He remained in custody, as of 5pm on Monday.

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed it is treating the death as "suspicious", with officers now investigating to ascertain the exact circumstances of the woman’s death.

Formal identification has not yet taken place, but her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Gunson said: “This investigation is in its early stages, and we ask that anyone with information make contact with us.

“There will be an ongoing police presence in the area as we conduct our enquiries, we thank local residents for their patience.”
