Don’t come in - the water’s not lovely!

That’s the warning Waverley Borough Council has made to wild swimmers after an outbreak of harmful algae at a beauty spot.

Blooms of blue-green algae have broken out once again at Frensham Great Pond, forcing WBC to issue a no-swimming policy at the site between Farnham and Hindhead.

The policy will remain active at the pond for the foreseeable future but visitors can still enjoy the beach as long as they follow the safety rules and check the water quality before taking a dip.

Blue-green algae bloom can produce potentially lethal toxins that can kill wild animals, livestock and domestic pets.

Humans are at risk of rashes after skin contact while conditions like nausea, vomiting, stomach pains, fever, headaches and more serious illnesses such as liver and brain damage can occur if swallowed.

Not all BGA blooms and scums are toxic but it’s not worth the risk.
