Beacon Hill Football Club has ambitious plans for the future – and is aiming to make the most of the Lionesses’ thrilling Euro 2022 success.
The club is raising money to improve its pavilion at Hindhead Playing Fields, and a JustGiving page has been launched to help raise £5,000.
And with England’s 2-1 win against Germany in the final of Euro 2022 still fresh in the mind, the club is hoping to grow its popular girls’ section even further.
Beacon Hill Football Club was set up nearly 20 years ago and, in that time, has grown from a small club with a squad of 20 boys to a club that is now playing regularly with more than 450 boys, girls and adults.
The club has 24 mixed/boys’ teams, seven girls’ teams, one disability team and four senior teams. It competes in the North East Youth Hampshire League, the South Surrey League and the Guildford and Woking Alliance League.
Beacon Hill’s home pitches are at Hindhead Playing Fields, and the club also trains and plays on a number of pitches in the Waverley area – both grass and all-weather turf.
The club has secured access at – and is a leading partner in – the approved new 3G pitch at Woolmer Hill, which will allow access to more all-weather pitches for training and matches – particularly through the winter months.
Beacon Hill also hosts an annual football tournament over two weekends in May which attracts more than 900 players from grassroots clubs across the local area.
Beacon Hill chairman Jamie Gateshill said: “As the new chairman, appointed in July 2022, I feel it is vital to uphold the well-established ethos of the club – a club which ensures the welfare of our children is paramount.
“Beacon Hill FC is a club open to all players regardless of gender, race, nationality, ethnic origin, colour, religion, sexual orientation or perceived ability as a footballer.
“Success should not be measured solely by the trophies we win, but by the number of children who choose to play for Beacon Hill FC and continue to play for us throughout their childhood – with a sense of belonging and most importantly with a smile on their face, whatever the result.
“However, football by its nature is a competitive sport and so I also want our players to achieve their best as individual players and as part of a team.
“Beacon Hill FC is a club at the heart of the community. We have strong ties with schools, local events and other clubs and organisations – and we are always looking to establish new relationships.
“We rely on the support and help of all parents to manage logistics on matchdays, sponsors for club kit, and volunteers to help with the ongoing management of the club.
“We are now looking to improve the pavilion at the playing fields, which is in desperate need of repair. We have plans in place to rebuild, but need to raise funds to do this.
“We have the support of the town mayor – as she did back in 2005 when she opened our existing pavilion. We are keen to raise more money for this project and attract sponsors to help achieve this goal.”
Beacon Hill is aiming to expand its girls’ football offering.
Beacon Hill head of girls’ football Angela Walters said: “As I embark on the new challenge of head of girls’ football at Beacon Hill this season, I am looking forward to seeing the positive impact the 2022 Euros and 2023 World Cup will have across all our teams.”
Beacon Hill also offers disability football. Through discussions with and support from Surrey FA, the club started a frame football team for children with cerebral palsy this year – the Beacon Hill Flames.
The club ran taster sessions from April to June. Twelve children turned up for the first session, and eight to ten children attended most of the sessions. The club is now looking for more children with cerebral palsy to join the Flames.
Beacon Hill has received a grant from Allianz Sports Fund to buy specialised frames for football, and a donation in memory of Mark Price to buy new futsal balls, mini goals and a Sportsperson’s Cup in his honour – which will be awarded annually.
