Six years, countless adverts, and still no one has stepped up to help Camelsdale’s children cross the road safely.

For more than six years, Camelsdale Primary School has been searching for a new Crossing Patrol Officer after their previous one retired. Despite extensive efforts – including local newspaper ads, social media campaigns, traditional job listings, and leaflet drops – no one has come forward to take on the role.

The position, funded by West Sussex County Council, is a paid job with full training and ongoing support from the school. It is a highly flexible role, making it suitable for a variety of people – retirees looking to stay active, parents who want to fit work around family commitments, or those in other jobs who would like to give back to their community while getting fresh air each day. The school is happy to consider applicants for mornings, afternoons, or just a few days a week.

Camelsdale village and its school community are known for being friendly and welcoming, with many families living within walking distance. But with traffic on Camelsdale Road increasing, concerns for children’s safety have grown. The school’s Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs), who help promote safe travel and road awareness, feel it is disheartening that no one has come forward to help for so long. They, along with the wider school community, are desperate to find someone willing to take on this vital role.

A Crossing Patrol Officer would make a real difference, ensuring children can travel to and from school safely each day.
