Badshot Lea manager Gavin Smith was disappointed with his side’s performance after they exited the Surrey Senior Cup with a 1-0 defeat at home to ten-man Abbey Rangers in the first round.
Brad Marshall’s 18th-minute goal was enough to send the Combined Counties Premier Division South visitors through at Westfield Lane.
“We didn't do enough,” said Smith. “We needed a win and we decided to give people an opportunity to see if they could be any better than some players who have been playing. It's not ultimately those players' fault, but as a collective they were nowhere near good enough.
“I felt we started well and looked like we were going to win the game. If we had got one goal we would have won it by quite a lot, but we didn't. They (Abbey Rangers) grew into the game and probably had the better chances. Even with ten men they had the better chances.
“We showed a lack of quality and a lack of urgency. The boys have been told some home truths. To lose like that isn't good enough. It's not good enough for us as a management team. The club will be bitterly disappointed and I'd expect people to tell us it isn't good enough.
“We left out some players with good quality and that was our decision. It's really harsh to lay the blame on some players who have come in to show what they can do. I don't really want to do that.
“Maybe we should have carried on with the same team from the Binfield game. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but we felt we were doing the right thing. I'm disappointed that we couldn't beat a team in the league below.”
Smith had made a number of changes to his side for the cup tie, and admitted he expected the players coming into the side to make more of their opportunity.
“They're all young players,” said Smith. “They should want to come in and make a difference and show what they can do. That was what the idea was – to get some fresh energy and some fresh people. They didn't do enough.
“I don't think we moved the ball quickly enough, but they (Abbey Rangers) defended well and deserved to go through.
“We didn't get in behind them. We didn't have any quality. I don't think we beat the full-backs once, got in behind or put a ball across the box for the strikers.”
