Two superb strikes from Theo Glazier helped Liss Athletic reach 100 league goals and seal a top-five finish with a 5-1 victory against Denmead in the Hampshire Premier Football League Senior Division.
All the goals came in a pulsating second half at the Newman Collard Playing Fields. Angus MacKay got the Blues up-and-running, neatly dispatching beyond the Denmead keeper. Glazier's sumptuous scissor-kicked volley then made it two before Will Porter pulled one back for Denmead. Alfie McWilliams finished a well-worked move to restore Liss' two-goal advantage, before Harry Stanbridge scored the home side’s 99th goal of the season to make it 4-1. Glazier brought up the century in emphatic style, unleashing a thunderbolt from outside the box that found the top corner.
The victory meant Liss finished the season in fifth place in the Hampshire Premier League Senior Division after picking up 55 points from their 30 league games. This was a significant improvement on the previous season's tenth-place finish.
Liss also enjoyed a successful junior tournament and Pompey Legends fundraiser at Newman Collard. A barbecue, bar, sweet stall, fastest shot competition, ice cream van, bouncy castles, massage tent and Pompey-related raffle – including a first prize of lunch with the Pompey management and meeting the players at the training ground – all added to the fun.
Lee Bradbury, Guy Butters, Rowan Vine and Dave Waterman featured for the Pompey squad. Liss Athletic junior players were mascots on the day and Liss goalkeeper Jack Tutton wore the Pompey number one shirt for the afternoon.
Liss ran out 9-5 victors in an entertaining encounter in front of a crowd of 414. The day helped the club smash its goal of raising £3,750 to put towards Football Foundation funding to purchase new pitch maintenance equipment – which will benefit all age groups.
