Haslemere’s women’s first team slipped to a 3-0 defeat at Southampton in South Central Women’s Premier Division Two on Saturday.

The visitors started well, applying pressure from the off and forcing some saves from the Southampton keeper, but were unable to convert their chances.

The home side grew into the game and started to apply pressure of their own through long balls through to their skilful forwards.

The Haslemere defence stood firm in open play and distributed the ball out of defence with confidence.

Some slick passing play down the wings from the visitors resulted in several short corners but none were converted.

Southampton converted a corner of their own to lead 1-0 at half-time.

The home side stepped the speed of their play up a level after the break.

Haslemere continued to work hard but gave Southampton too much space to play, and as the game stretched lines became isolated, making it difficult for the visitors to find the same connections as they had in the first half.

Southampton’s second goal came from a series of deflections from a corner, ricocheting off two Haslemere sticks and past goalkeeper Jo Burder.

The visitors did not give up and continued to create chances, and Cindi Pretorius’ solo run and shot was saved by the Southampton keeper.

The last play of the game saw Haslemere defending another short corner, which Southampton converted to run out 3-0 winners.

Haslemere’s women will host South Berkshire on Saturday (2pm).

Haslemere’s men’s first team won 4-2 at Basingstoke in South Central Men’s Premier Division One on Saturday.

Haslemere started the stronger of the two teams and raced into a 2-0 lead.

The visitors then scored their third goal from a well-worked short corner routine.

Haslemere then let Basingstoke back into the game and conceded two goals in quick succession to make it 3-2 and set up a nervy final 15 minutes.

The visitors took back control with ten minutes to go, scoring from another short corner to close out the game.

Haslemere claimed the three points and are in fourth place in the league table.

Haslemere will travel to South Berkshire on Saturday (1.30pm).
