A Surrey GP surgery caring for more than 5,300 patients has revolutionised cholesterol management with an innovative virtual consultation model, cutting 100 appointments over six months.
Dr Talha Sami, a partner at the Chiddingfold Surgery, has been working for ten years in the NHS. As a frequent contributor to the BBC on medical affairs, Dr Sami believes: “As clinicians, it is really important to engage in our local community. I believe it can help empower patients and offer them a sense of sanity amongst the whirlwind of misinformation.”
At his surgery, to address time constraints for both clinicians and patients, the practice developed an educational video covering lifestyle changes, exercise, and cholesterol-lowering therapies. Patients due for cholesterol reviews received the video and responded via text, choosing either medication or lifestyle adjustments. This eliminated the need for routine consultations while ensuring informed decision-making.
The results were significant. The surgery saved an average of 16 appointments per month, reallocating time to more complex cases and improving efficiency. Patients welcomed the flexibility, with feedback highlighting the ease of understanding and convenience of reviewing information at their own pace. The ability to replay key points also enhanced retention and engagement.
To maintain effectiveness, the team continuously monitored patient responses and refined the process based on feedback.
The success of the initiative did not go unnoticed. The local Integrated Care Board (ICB) celebrated the work, sharing a video to inspire other GP surgeries. Dr Sami believes that by adopting this innovative approach, practices can optimise resources, improve patient education, and enhance service delivery.
Dr Sami said: “This project demonstrates that digital tools, when thoughtfully implemented, can significantly transform patient care while maintaining a human approach. We are proud to have pioneered this model and hope it inspires further innovation in primary care settings across the country.”
